Binoculars basics

What 8x42 means.

4 min read

Binoculars aren't essential, but they make a big difference.

The numbers

  • The first number is magnification: 8x makes birds look 8 times closer
  • The second is the lens width in millimeters; bigger lets in more light
  • 8x42 is a popular, steady all-round choice
  • Higher magnification is harder to hold steady

Tip

Find the bird with your eyes first, then raise the binoculars without looking away.
