How to identify birds

Size, shape, behavior, then color.

5 min read

Experienced birders often know a bird before they see its colors.

Look at

  1. Size compared with birds you know, like a sparrow, robin or crow
  2. Shape of the body, bill and tail
  3. Behavior: hopping, creeping up trunks, hovering
  4. Color pattern and markings
  5. Where it is: ground, trees, water, feeder

Listen

Calls and songs often give birds away before you see them.
